Choirs at St John’s

Our Choirs

  • Parish Choir

St. John’s Parish Choir is one of Canada’s only fully professional church choirs. Under the direction of Director of Music Patrick Murray, the Parish Choir leads the congregation in Choral Eucharist or Choral Matins on Sundays at 11:00am, and in seasonal Evensongs and services of Lessons and Carols. The Parish Choir has an extensive repertoire, emphasizing both traditional and contemporary musical expression within the Anglican choral tradition with a particular focus on new music by Canadian and international composers.

  • Volunteer Choir

The Volunteer Choir offers musical leadership at the 9:00 liturgy. It is a group of members of the Parish who love to sing. The Volunteer Choir is non-auditioned and is directed by Jurgen Petrenko.

  • Children's Choir

The Elora Children’s Choir is a community choral ensemble for children ages 7+. Directed by Kate Wright, the choir provides a supportive place for young singers to learn music-reading and musicianship skills through a variety of music, and performs several times each term both at the church and in the Elora-Fergus community. Music is primarily secular, and all are welcome!

  • Compline Choir

Compline, also known as Night Prayer, is the final liturgy of the day in the traditional monastic hours of the Christian church. St. John’s offers a service of Compline on the Tuesday of the first full week of each month at 8:00pm. Our compline liturgy draws particularly on chant and Renaissance choral music to offer a uniquely and meditative and reflective community experience.

The St. John’s Compline Choir is open to any interested community singers and meets once per month on Tuesdays at 6:30pm to rehearse before the service. Singers don’t have to commit to all services and are welcome to sing as they are able. While choral skills are an asset, there is music on each service that is accessible to singers of all backgrounds and abilities.

For more information or to join our Compline mailing list, please contact our Director of Music, Patrick Murray.
